We would always advise you to discuss the planned flight with your GP. Also please check the
health requirements », which must be met when you embark on your journey.
To ensure that we can make the best possible preparations for you, please let us know what assistance you require, preferably when you book your flight, but not later than 48 hours prior to departure. It is also advisable to register well in advance because the number of flight guests with limited mobility per flight may be restricted and depends in particular on the type of aircraft scheduled for the flight. We will require the following information when you register:
- Name of passengers and travel companion, if applicable
- (Number of your severe disability pass)
- Degree of disability
- Nature of disability

airberlin offers passengers requiring assistance a free escort service at both the departure and destination airports. Wheelchairs can be provided free of charge for passengers with a walking or severe disability for the transfer to and from the aircraft. When you reserve this service, please let us know how much assistance you will require.
At many airports wheelchair users will have the option of pre-boarding, i.e. boarding the plane before the other passengers.

Transport of flight guests' own wheelchairs
Passengers’ own wheelchairs are carried free of charge and in addition to the free baggage allowance. If you are enquiring about transportation of a wheelchair, please let us know the measurements, weight and the type of the wheelchair in question.
For reasons of space wheelchairs are carried in the hold. We therefore ask you to check in your wheelchair as special baggage that is ready for transportation. At the destination airport your wheelchair will be returned to you either directly at the aircraft or at the baggage carousel.
You can also check in your sports or racing wheelchair free of charge as sports baggage.
Important - please note
If your wheelchair is battery-driven, please note the following information for the various types of battery:
- The battery must not exceed 300 W and one spare 300 W battery or two spare batteries max. 160 W each may be carried in hand baggage only.
- Wheelchairs and other battery-operated mobility aids with a leak-proof dry cell or gel cell battery can be carried in the hold provided that the battery is not connected ready for operation and that the battery terminals are disconnected and electrically isolated to prevent any accidental short circuit.
- Furthermore the battery must be secured to the wheelchair or mobility aid.
For safety reasons different criteria apply to wheelchairs or other battery-operated mobility aids with wet cell batteries. Please contact our Service Center » well in advance for information about the applicable regulations.
Transport of an onboard wheelchair
If necessary, flight guests have the option of requesting a wheelchair to be provided on board free of charge. To ensure that the wheelchair is available at the required time, the request should be made via the airberlin Service Center not later than 48 hours prior to departure. We would advise flight guests who are unable to walk at all to travel with an accompanying person.
If you require the use of a special seat shell/seat aid for children who will need it during the flight because of a disability, a test must be carried out by TÜV Rheinland (Technical Inspectorate) and what is called a “flash certificate” must be issued. The cost of this certificate is borne by airberlin. Please complete pages 2-4; page 5 must be completed by the relevant doctor. Please note that the process takes about 10 days. This email address can only be used for questions about disabled seat shells.
Seat reservation is free of charge for passengers with a severe disability pass (or comparable document) for 50 % disability or more, and for a travel companion. For safety reasons it is not possible to reserve XL seats.
Passengers with a severe walking disability or unable to walk and any passengers with a severe visual impairment are advised to travel with a companion. The travel companion must be at least 16 years old, must not have reduced mobility and must not accompany any other passengers requiring assistance.
Travel companions of passengers with a severe disability pass and registered as category “B” (or comparable) only have to pay taxes and charges as well as the service charge on German domestic flights with airberlin.
Flight guests with limited mobility can, of course, take assistance or therapy dogs into the aircraft cabin free of charge. The same applies to diabetic alert dogs. The dog does not need to be transported in a travel crate; however, in the interest of flight safety it must remain at its owner's seat and behave calmly. Please note that it is necessary to be in possession of all the required documentation for the dog's entry and exit (valid animal passport, vaccination and health certificates, etc.).
Special baggage for medical purposes (ventilators, inhalers, walking aids, etc.) is transported free of charge on presentation of a medical certificate. Medicines can also be carried free of charge if accompanied by a doctor’s prescription. Free baggage for medical purposes may only contain medical equipment or medicines prescribed by a doctor, otherwise the normal baggage regulations come into force.
Each passenger is limited to one item of baggage for carrying medical equipment.
If transported as checked baggage the maximum weight allowance is 23 kg.
Medical baggage is not calculated as part of the free baggage allowance.
For safety reasons, all medical equipment must be registered in advance via the airberlin Service Center.
It is obligatory to register medical equipment in writing (by post, fax or email); passengers who are in possession of an appropriate severe disability pass can register by calling our Service Center.
The following types of special baggage for medical purposes are transported free of charge under the above-mentioned conditions:
• ventilators, asthma equipment, inhalers
• CPAP devices
• materials for dressings
• walking aids (crutches, walking frames)
• wheelchairs incl. accessories (with the current restrictions)LINK?
• sanitary products (nappies), stoma
• shower/WC-seat, transfer board for wheelchair users
• doctors' emergency cases
• dialysis machines, defibrillators, lymphatic draining devices, electrotherapy devices
• suction equipment, irrigators
• medicines and injections
Medical aids and equipment (e.g. respirators, inhalers and walking aids), as well as medication, are carried free of charge on presentation of the appropriate medical certificate.

If you plan on traveling with a respiratory assistance device such as a respirator, ventilator, Portable Oxygen Concentrator (POC), or Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine, we encourage you to contact a reservations agent well in advance of your flight. Please note, passengers traveling to or from the United States may be required to provide enough batteries to power the device for at least 150% of the maximum flight duration and in some cases, the number of spare lithium ion batteries you can bring with you in the cabin may be limited for safety reasons.

Complaint Resolution Official (CRO)
If you encounter problems during your travel with Air Berlin, please feel free to ask any crew member or ground staff for a Complaint Resolution Official (CRO). Our CRO’s are specially trained in awareness and sensitivity as well as in all the applicable regulations and legislation. They will be happy to answer your questions. Our CRO’s are available during operating hours at all our U.S. Destinations and at Dusseldorf Airport.
