LTU International Airlines

The German airline was founded in 1955 as "Lufttransport Union" and was based in Frankfurt am Main. When it started operations in 1956, LTU initially offered charter flights. In 1961 the company moved its headquarters to Düsseldorf.

The early vision of an "integrated tourism concern" took shape in 1964: LTU now became a tour operator as well. The company founded companies that included Meier’s Weltreisen and took over Tjæreborg, Jahn Reisen and Marlboro Reisen. In 1996, these were brought under the umbrella of the newly founded LTU Touristik GmbH, although the brands were retained.

In 1990 LTU became a member of IATA, the International Air Transport Association, and now offered scheduled flights to the USA as well.

In 2000 the Cologne-based company Rewe Touristik acquired 100 per cent of LTU Touristik and its brands. The same company also acquired a 40 per cent stake in the LTU airline. In 2006 Hans Rudolf Wöhrl and his Nuremberg-based company, Intro Verwaltungs GmbH, became a partner in the business, and in the same year LTU’s managing director, Jürgen Marbach, acquired the remaining 45 per cent stake in the company.

In 2005 the American Academy of Hospitality Sciences awarded LTU the coveted Five Star Diamond Award for outstanding quality and best service in the Business Class / long-haul category. LTU was recently voted the airline with "Europe’s newest fleet" and "Passengers’ Favourite Airline" by Clever reisen!.

In August 2007 Air Berlin took over LTU. LTU’s long-haul aircraft operate on routes to the Dominican Republic, the USA, Canada, the Maldives etc.
