Seat reservations for families (maximum 2 adults over 12 years of age and at least 1 child under 2 years) are free of charge on airberlin and NIKI flights and can be made during the booking process or by calling our Service Center » up until 48 hours before departure.
Except JustFly fare category: seat reservations are not possible in this fare category.
For children under 2 years of age (infants) the baggage allowance is one bag weighing up to 23 kg, regardless of the service class. Children aged between 2 and 11 years have the same baggage allowances as adults. In addition, a buggy/pushchair, child’s car seat and travel carry cot can be checked in free of charge for any child under 12.
Except in JustFly: no checked baggage is included in this fare category but can be added to your booking. A buggy/push chair, child's car seat and travel carry cot can, of course, be checked in free of charge.
Children aged five years or more may travel unaccompanied on airberlin. Our flight attendants will take special care of our young passengers. Unaccompanied minors between 5 and 11 years old must be booked in as such via the Service Center » or at one of our airberlin ticket desk. A handling fee of 40 EUR per flight applies to the carriage of unaccompanied minors on short-haul and medium-haul flights. The fee charged for long-haul flights is 80 EUR per flight. For further information please refer to our FAQs »
Important - please note:
Some countries have special entry and exit regulations for children travelling on their own and for children accompanied by someone other than their parents. For more information please contact the embassies and consulates of the relevant countries!
To ensure that our youngest passengers are looked after properly, we provide cots free of charge in the first row on many flights of 90 minutes or longer (for infants up to 12 months old, subject to availability). You will also receive a bag with a nappy, baby bottles and a bib. We are also happy to warm up baby food during the flight.
We offer our young passengers interesting toys depending on the season. Whether it’s colouring books, flight certificates, comics or airberlin caps – we always have a surprise up our sleeve. On long-haul flights, kids can expect their own audio program and cartoons.
On long-haul flights you also have the option, free of charge, of pre-ordering special children’s menus » for children from the age of two.
Please note that some flights may also be operated by a codeshare partner. Your flight confirmation will show which airline operates the flight. The service offer may possibly differ.
Passengers travelling with children may use their own child safety restraint systems on board airberlin flights, provided that the restraint systems are certified and marked as such. The following child seats and safety restraint systems are suitable:
- Child seats that have been approved by a member state of the Joint Aviation Authorities (JAA), the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) or Transport Canada for exclusive use in aircraft and are marked accordingly or
- that are approved in accordance with safety standard ECE-R44/03 or a later version for use in motor vehicles or
- that are approved in accordance with Canadian standard 213/213.1 for use in motor vehicles and aircraft or

"THIS CHILD RESTRAINT SYSTEM CONFORMS TO ALL APPLICABLE FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARDS" (and if appropriate also: "THIS RESTRAINT IS CERTIFIED FOR USE IN MOTOR VEHICLES AND AIRCRAFT").
The child restraint systems must be approved for being secured by means of a two-point (lap) belt, as they are fixed using the seat belt attached to the aircraft seat and must remain in this position throughout the flight (including during takeoff and landing). The cabin crew will check on board before departure whether the child seat can be fitted.
Experience has shown that the following models (as well as their successor models), which carry the TÜV Rheinland’s seal of approval "For use in aircraft", are particularly suitable:

Since infants (children under 2 years of age) are not entitled to a seat, an extra seat must be booked if an infant is to be carried in a child seat. In this event the passenger is charged for a child under 12 years of age; this is not possible in the JustFly fare category.
Please contact our Service Center » at least 48 hours before departure to book the extra seat. If you pre-book a child safety restraint system we will reserve a seat at the same time. This is free of charge for families with children under 2 years of age, provided that the booking is not made in the JustFly fare category.
Please note that some aircraft in our fleet are not allowed to be used with safety restraint systems. Further information will be provided during the booking procedure or can be obtained from our Service Center.

For bookings made in the JustFly fare category the child discount is only granted for infants under 2 years of age.
The age of children on the date of the return flight is the one used. Please note that infants (children under two years old) have no seat entitlement. Only one infant is permitted per adult. Only one baby is permitted per row of seats.
Please note that children have to be identified at the check-in desk just like adults (e.g. own passport).
For safety reasons infants who celebrate their 2nd birthday between the outward and return flights may only use a seat of their own on the outward flight with a suitable and approved child seat.
Expectant mothers are carried up to 4 weeks before the expected delivery date. The return flight also has to be completed before this date. As proof that the 36th week of pregnancy has not been exceeded, the presentation of pregnancy records or a medical certificate may be required.
Please note: as of 26thJune 2012, children may not travel on their parents' passports.
European requirements have resulted in a major change in the German passport law: From 26th June 2012, child entries in parents’ passports will become invalid and no longer entitle the child to cross the border to another country. Therefore, as of this date, all children (from birth onwards) will be required to have their own travel documents when travelling to other countries.
Please note: Child entries in parents’ passports become invalid as of 26th June 2012
