Air Berlin: Improved revenue in March
In March 2009, Air Berlin, Germany's second largest airline company, was able to increase its revenue per available seat kilometer to 5.45 Eurocents, i.e. an increase of 4.2 percent (03/2008: 5.23 Eurocents). Although capacity was only reduced by 0.8 percent in comparison to March of the previous year, the number of passengers transported decreased by 5.6 percent to 2,053,960 passengers (03/2008: 2,175,427). Fleet capacity utilization decreased by 3.7 percentage points to 74.1 percent (03/2008: 77.8 percent). A reason for the decline in the number of passengers is that the Easter season, which is traditionally a strong season for tourist travel, did not fall in the month of March this year.
For the period from January to March 2009, Air Berlin welcomed a total of 5,469,980 passengers on board, i.e. 6.2 percent less than in the corresponding period of the previous year (01-03/2008: 5,831,160 passengers). This decline is offset by an accumulated capacity reduction of 3.9 percent. For the first three months of the year, fleet capacity utilization decreased by 1.7 percentage points, namely from 73.2 to 71.5 percent.
