For passengers with restricted mobility, we offer free assistance services for your airberlin flight. This includes assistance when boarding and exiting the aircraft, assistance at both the arrival and destination airports, as well as free transportation of your wheelchair.
If you require any special aids for your journey, please register with your name and booking reference up to 48 hours before your journey begins, either online at My Booking » or using the Niki service hotline:

Alternatively, you may also add the services to your booking in the final stage of the flight booking process.

If you need assistance during your trip, please notify us 48 h in advance, using your name and your booking number, online under My Booking » or in the last step of your online booking.

Escort at the departure and destination airport

airberlin offers passengers requiring assistance a free escort service at both the departure and destination airports. Wheelchairs can be provided free of charge for passengers with a walking or severe disability for the transfer to and from the aircraft. When you reserve this service, please let us know how much assistance you will require.

At many airports wheelchair users will have the option of pre-boarding, i.e. boarding the plane before the other passengers.

Transport of flight guests' own wheelchairs

wheelchairPassengers’ own wheelchairs are carried free of charge and not in addition to the free baggage allowance. If you are inquiring about transportation of a wheelchair, please let us know the measurements, weight and the type of the wheelchair in question.

For reasons of space wheelchairs are carried in the hold. We therefore ask you to check in your wheelchair as special baggage that is ready for transportation.  At the destination airport your wheelchair will be returned to you either directly at the aircraft or at the baggage claim.

Please note:
if your wheelchair is 86 cm high or more, it can only be carried in the hold if the backrest has been folded back. Please also note that for flights on the Turboprop- DH4, the maximum height is 70 cm. If it is not possible to fold the backrest back, or if the height of the wheelchair exceeds the maximum permissible height even with the backrest folded, it can only be carried in the hold if the batteries have been removed from it, so that the wheelchair can be transported upturned.

You can also check in your sports or racing wheelchair free of charge as sports baggage.

Battery-powered wheelchairs can be carried under the following conditions:

  • The battery poles must be insulated against short-circuiting.
  • The battery must not be connected ready for operation.

Important - please note
If your wheelchair is battery-driven, please note the following information for the various types of battery:

Lithium batteries:

  • The battery must not exceed 300 Wh, and one spare battery of 300 Wh, or two spare batteries of not more than 160 Wh each, may only be taken on board as hand luggage.
  • With folding wheelchairs the battery must be removed and carried in the passenger cabin.

Leakproof wet-cell batteries (gel batteries):

  • The battery must be securely fastened to the wheelchair.
  • If the wheelchair is constructed so that the battery can be removed, the battery must be removed and carried in a secure package in the cargo hold.

For safety reasons different criteria apply to wheelchairs or other battery-operated mobility aids with wet cell batteries. Please contact our Service Center » well in advance for information about the applicable regulations.

Transport of an onboard wheelchair

When required, passengers have the option to order an on-board wheelchair free of charge. To ensure that the wheelchair is made available punctually, the order must be placed via the aiberlin Service Centre no later than 48 hours before departure. Please note: even when requests are received on time, the on-board wheelchair service may not always be confirmed. We recommend that passengers who are totally immobile should board the aircraft with the assistance of a travelling companion.

Request a disabled seat shell

Special seating aids used by children with disabilities during the flight require testing and rapid certification by the TÜV Rheinland. The cost of this will be covered by airberlin. Free seat reservationseat

For flight guests with reduced mobility, the seat reservation for themselves and a companion is included free of charge.
On short and medium-haul flights » it is possible to reserve seats in seat categories A and B; on long-haul flights » this is also possible for the Preferred Seats category.
For safety reasons, passengers with limited mobility may not reserve XL seats next to emergency exits. XL seats that are not located next to emergency exits are available for reservation by all passengers.

Travelling with a companion

Passengers with a severe walking disability or unable to walk and any passengers with a severe visual impairment are advised to travel with a companion. The travel companion must be at least 16 years old, must not have reduced mobility and must not accompany any other passengers requiring assistance.
Travel companions of passengers with a severe disability pass and registered as category “B” (or comparable) only have to pay taxes and charges as well as the payment charge on German domestic flights with airberlin.

Transport of companion dogs

Passengers with restricted mobility may bring assistance dogs (e.g. service dogs for blind or diabetic people) and therapy dogs on board in the aircraft cabin free of charge. The registration must be completed at least 24 hours before departure. You must bring all of the necessary travel documents (valid passport, vaccination and health certificates, etc.) Dogs officially classified as fighting dog breeds may only be transported in a suitable transport crate in the cargo hold. Transporting medical equipment

destination_boardSpecial baggage for medical purposes (ventilators, inhalers, walking aids, etc.) is transported free of charge on presentation of a medical certificate.  Medicines can also be carried free of charge if accompanied by a doctor’s prescription. Free baggage for medical purposes may only contain medical equipment or medicines prescribed by a doctor, otherwise the normal baggage regulations come into force.

Each passenger is limited to one item of baggage for carrying medical equipment.
If transported as checked baggage the maximum weight allowance is 23 kg.
Medical baggage is not calculated as part of the free baggage allowance.
For safety reasons, all medical equipment must be registered in advance via the airberlin Service Center.
It is obligatory to register medical equipment in writing (by post, fax or email); passengers who are in possession of an appropriate severe disability pass can register by calling our Service Center.

The following types of special baggage for medical purposes are transported free of charge under the above-mentioned conditions:
•    ventilators, asthma equipment, inhalers
•    CPAP devices
•    catheters
•    materials for dressings
•    walking aids (crutches, walking frames)
•    wheelchairs incl. accessories (with the current restrictions)LINK?
•    sanitary products (nappies), stoma
•    shower/WC-seat, transfer board for wheelchair users
•    protheses
•    doctors' emergency cases
•    dialysis machines, defibrillators, lymphatic draining devices, electrotherapy devices
•    suction equipment, irrigators
•    medicines and injections

Medical aids and equipment (e.g. respirators, inhalers and walking aids), as well as medication, are carried free of charge on presentation of the appropriate medical certificate.

If you plan on traveling with a respiratory assistance device such as a respirator, ventilator, Portable Oxygen Concentrator (POC), or Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machine, we encourage you to contact a reservations agent well in advance of your flight. Please note, passengers traveling to or from the United States may be required to provide enough batteries to power the device for at least 150% of the maximum flight duration and in some cases, the number of spare lithium ion batteries you can bring with you in the cabin may be limited for safety reasons.

Complaint Resolution Official (CRO)

If you encounter problems during your travel with Air Berlin, please feel free to ask any crew member or ground staff for a Complaint Resolution Official (CRO). Our CRO’s are specially trained in awareness and sensitivity as well as in all the applicable regulations and legislation. They will be happy to answer your questions.
