Unaccompanied minors
Children over the age of 5 can also travel unaccompanied with airberlin. Our flight attendants take special care of our younger guests and a member of staff is also available to accompany your child while he/she is at the airport.
It is compulsory to register for this service in the case of children up to the age of 11. For children over the age of 12 the service is optional. Registration is possible up to 24 hours before departure.

As a special treat, unaccompanied children will receive a soft drink and a snack free of charge on all short- and medium-haul flights. On long-haul flights, children can order from the children's menu free of charge via our service center.

Making a reservation
You can make reservations for children travelling unaccompanied over the phone via our Service-Center » or in person at the airberlin ticket desk at the airport.
You will need the following information:
- Details of the child (Name and date of birth)
- Details of the person to be invoiced
- Details of who is delivering the child to the airport and who is collecting him/her (name address and telephone number)
There are special regulations for children entering and leaving national territory in certain countries. Please check with the corresponding embassies and consulates of the countries involved.
Before your flight
Once you have made the reservation for the flight and service for the child travelling alone you can then complete the duty of care form. Access the form here » (link opens in new window)
After filling out the form, print five copies and bring these, together with a valid passport/child ID card, to the check-in counter. We recommend leaving plenty of time before your scheduled departure to complete all of the necessary formalities at the check-in counter.The following deadlines are applicable:Short and Medium Haul:UMNR must be checked in the latest 60 minutes prior to departure.Long HaulUMNR must be checked in the latest 90 minutes prior to departure.Flights ex USAUMNR must be checked in the latest 120 minutes prior to departure.
At the airport
It is essential that the child be accompanied to/from the airport by an adult. This escort needs to stay at the airport for 30 minutes after the aircraft has taken off.
An accompanying adult to/from the airport is required. The accompanying adult should remain at the airport up to 30 minutes after the airplane has taken off.
Your child will be checked in for the flight at the check-in desk. The following documents are required:
- Booking confirmation
- Passport/child ID card
- Assistance form (five copies)
- Receipt showing that the service fee is already paid
- Visa for the destination country, if required
Afterwards, your child will receive a small pouch, which must be carried with them at all times during the flight.
At some airports, you can accompany your child to the boarding gate (depending on the airport). Just tell the member of staff at the Check-in desk. Otherwise the child is escorted to the aircraft by airport staff and our flight attendants then take receipt of your child and look after the young guest during the flight.
At the destination
Please note that it is only the person stated on the form who is authorised to collect the child.
Spain
Minors under 18 years of age with Spanish nationality who leave Spain unaccompanied, or who fly inside Spain, need to carry a passport or ID (Documento Nacional de Identidad) and a written authorisation to travel from their parents or guardians.
This authorisation is issued by the relevant authorities (police, civil guard, lawyer) and should be shown at Check-in.
Minors under 18 years of age, who are leaving Spain in the company of a third party, also need to have a passport or ID and the written declaration or permission of their parents. If the flight is a domestic one this written statement from the parents is not necessary.
Italy
Minors under 14 years of age who are leaving Italy without their parents/guardians need a written declaration for this purpose ("dichiarazione di accompagno"). Parents need to apply for this declaration in good time through the relevant Italian authorities and show it at Check-in.
Portugal
Any Portuguese child under the age of 18 has to have a written declaration from his/her parents permitting them to travel. If the parents are married the consent of one parent will suffice. If the parents are not married, both parents need to grant their consent. This also applies to children who have a Portuguese residence entered in their passport/ID. This travel permit must be notarised or stamped by the consulate/embassy.
Russia
Any Russian child under 18 years of age has to have a written declaration from his/her parents permitting them to travel. If the parents are married the consent of one partner will suffice. If the parents are not married, both parents need to grant their consent. This also applies to children who have a Russian residence entered in their passport/ID. This travel permit must be notarised or stamped by the consulate/embassy.
France
Any French child under the age of 18 has to have the written consent of his/her parents. This needs to be notarised.
